Native Plant Profile

Purple Coneflower (Echinacea)

Purple Coneflower looks like a large daisy like flower, usually pinkish white to purple in colour, growing up to 70 cm tall with lance shaped leaves up its bristly stalk. It is most found throughout eastern Canada, and the eastern and midwestern United States in dry open woods, prairies and clearings, and are fairly drought tolerant. They thrive in full sun environments and are great for attracting pollinators to the garden.

Purple Coneflower is one of the most widely recognized medicinal plants in North America. Its most common use is for treatment of colds and upper respiratory infections. Cone flower root tea was used externally by First Nations as treatment for sores, wounds, burns, insect and snake bites. The root was also chewed to relieve tooth aches and aid digestion.

In addition to its medicinal properties, the plant is also entirely edible and the leaves can be used in salads or as a spinach substitute.

 Lost and Found

We have a number of items that are still in our lost and found. Students are encouraged to look through them to see if anything belongs to them. At the end of the year all the remaining items will be donated. If you think your child might have something there, please ask them to look, or stop by the office if you'd like to look.

Fun Lunches

Haysboro School council is pleased to continue to offer fun lunches once a month for all interested students in grade 1-6 as well as kindergarten students who stay at Maple Roots for lunch.  Orders may be made online through Healthy Hunger and are available for up to 5 days before the event.  Please register through the link provided: https://healthyhunger.ca/parent-help

Lunches are delivered to the school and served at lunch time, proceeds from fun lunches are directed back to school improvement, experiences and field trips.

Thank you all of our wonderful volunteers and School Council for supporting Fun Lunches and many other activities that happen at Haysboro School throughout the year!

Bus/Walk Zones and School Times

This is a reminder to ensure that you are receiving and reviewing emails that are sent from the Calgary Board of Education as well as the school. Over the last several weeks, there has been communication regarding updated bussing service as well as some adjustments to next year's start and end times that have resulted from the transportation changes. You can review the information on our school's website banner story: Important Updates About Transportation Services & Bell Times for the 2025-2026 School Year - Haysboro School or here on the CBE's webpage: Bell Times - Calendars - CBE and here: School Walk Zones

Please review this information as it will impact pick up and drop off for next year and depending on your address, you may find a change in your child's eligibility to ride the bus.

If you are not receiving these emails, please check to see if your spam filter is impacting what shows up in your inbox. If your main email address has changed, please contact Ms. Gauthier in the office.

Bikes and Scooters

We are very excited for the return of warmer weather and with that, we know that some students might be riding their bikes or scooters to school.  We would like to remind everyone that it's always best to bring a lock for your bike/scooter. At the start and end of the day, while other students are outside the school, we are asking that bikes/scooters be walked to the sidewalk before being ridden to reduce the risk of a collision.

A gentle reminder that as with all schools, the parking lot is not for student drop off or pickup.

Thank you in advance for parking on the street and walking your child to the school.
