Hello Haysboro Families!

Please see below for our weekly updates!

Fun Lunches

Haysboro School council is pleased to continue to offer fun lunches once a month for all interested students in grade 1-6 as well as kindergarten students who stay at Maple Roots for lunch.  Orders may be made online through Healthy Hunger and are available for up to 5 days before the event.  Please register through the link provided: https://healthyhunger.ca/parent-help

Lunches are delivered to the school and served at lunch time, proceeds from fun lunches are directed back to school improvement, experiences and field trips.

Thank you all of our wonderful volunteers and School Council for supporting Fun Lunches and many other activities that happen at Haysboro School throughout the year!

Elder Shirley

We had the pleasure and privilege to have Elder Shirley join us this week. She shared wonderful stories to teach us about kindness with ourselves and others and how important it is to understand the power of kindness in a community.

Bikes and Scooters

We are very excited for the return of warmer weather and with that, we know that some students might be riding their bikes or scooters to school.  We would like to remind everyone that it's always best to bring a lock for your bike/scooter. At the start and end of the day, while other students are outside the school, we are asking that bikes/scooters be walked to the sidewalk before being ridden to reduce the risk of a collision.

Native Plant Profile

Wild Mint (Mentha spp.)

Wild mint can be found inhabiting wetland marches, moist woods, streambanks and sometimes shallow water. They have clusters of pink to purple flowers along the stem with spade shaped, veined leaves that are highly scented of mint when crushed. Due to its fragrant and flavourful leaves, it is commonly used for flavouring teas and can be found in the “Tea beds” of the Dream catcher garden.

Traditionally, Mints have been used to aid digestion and expel gas from the digestive tract, hence the advent of after dinner mints. Among indigenous peoples, mint teas were used to treat colds, coughs, fevers, upset stomachs kidney problems and headaches. The oils from mint were also applied to the skin or as a lotion to relive arthritis or tenonitis pain, or leaves were packed into or around aching teeth. Wild Mint

Leadership

Over the past few weeks, several of our older students have been volunteering time during the day to support our younger students in a variety of ways from running games at recess to sitting with buddies to hear about their work in the classroom. This has been awesome to watch and we are so grateful for, and proud of all of the kindness and caring that we have seen!

Calgary Bylaw

You may have noticed bylaw officers around the school this week. While we didn't know they were coming, we're told that we can expect to see them in the future as well. Please be mindful of where you park, traffic and pedestrian safety, etc. during drop off and pick up. These are important in ensuring that everyone is safe around our wonderful school.

A gentle reminder that as with all schools, the parking lot is not for student drop off or pickup.

Thank you in advance for parking on the street and walking your child to the school.
